Coy Swanson Scalf

Coy Swanson Scalf, age 85, of St. Charles, Virginia went to be with the Lord on July 5th, 2017 at the Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. The oldest of ten children, he was born on April 8th, 1932 to the late William Burdine and Velva Elizabeth (Rogers) Scalf. Coy is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Shirley Mae Scalf, of the home and their four children; Danny Scalf of Woodway, VA, James Scalf and wife Lisa also of Woodway, VA, Rhonda Scalf Strong and Larry Scalf both of St. Charles, VA; five grandchildren and their spouses; Erica and Danny Honaker including Ace of Honaker, VA, Jamie and Jordon Crumley of Woodway, VA, Leslie and Harold Province of Pennington Gap, VA, Steven and Lorianne Scalf of Rose Hill, VA and Thomas and Samantha Scalf of Woodway, VA and four great grandchildren Madilyn Taylor, Alexander Taylor, Isabella Province and Gabriella Province. He is survived by three brothers Charles Scalf of Windsor, SC, Carl Scalf of Columbia, SC, and Joe Scalf and wife Betty of Paoli, IN and one sister Linda Scalf of Erin, TN, several nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, two brothers Larry and JB Scalf and three sisters Jean Burke, Doris Hertog and Sue Hollis. 
Coy was raised in the Benedict Coal Camp of St. Charles, Virginia. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean war. After several years living away from Lee County, he retired from the Coca Cola Bottling Company and returned to his hometown. His passion for St. Charles, Virginia compelled him to serve his community whole heartedly. He served for 21 years as the Chief of the St. Charles Volunteer Fire Department and 17 years as First Lieutenant of the St. Charles Volunteer Rescue squad. Coy held several terms on the St. Charles Water and Sewer Authority Board of Directors. In 2011, he was chosen by Sheriff Gary Parsons as an Honorary Deputy Sheriff of the Lee County Sherriff’s Department.  He also held memberships with the American Legion and the Lions Club. 
The family will receive friends on Saturday July 8th, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, Virginia. The funeral service will follow at 8:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Paul Davis Jr. officiating. Lifelong family friend Mike Sprinkle will be singing. The committal service and interment will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday July 9th, 2017, at the Cecil-Fry Cemetery in Pennington Gap, Virginia. Those who wish to attend the committal service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:00 p.m.  Pallbearers will be members of the St. Charles Fire Department and Rescue Squad, friends and relatives.  To honor Coy’s love for the Town of St. Charles and the St. Charles Fire Department, in lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the St. Charles Volunteer Fire Department. Donations will be accepted at the Powell Valley National Bank in Pennington Gap, VA and may also be mailed to the St. Charles Fire Department at PO Box 208 St. Charles, VA 24282.
