James Matthew Carter age 85 of Dryden, VA was born in Lee County, VA on Sunday, November 9, 1930 and passed away Monday, May 23, 2016 at his home in Dryden, VA. He had been a Veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War and retired from Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in Marietta, GA as a machinist. He was a member of the I.A.M. Union and the St. Charles Church of God.
He was preceded in death by two sons Frankie lee and James Roy Carter, his parents Elmer and Edith Brown Carter, a brother Phillip Carter and three sisters Bessie Parsons, Irene Brown and Hazel Stapleton.
James is survived by his wife Opal Woodard Carter of the home, a daughter Belinda Faye Platt and husband, Robert of Gaithersburg, MD, grandchildren Beth Ann Platt, Elizabeth Afelalo and Robert Platt and one sister Ruth Kirk of Dayton, OH.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the Province Funeral Home Sanctuary in Pennington Gap, VA with Rev. Roy Webb officiating.Visitation will be from 2:00 PM Thursday until the time of the service.Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, VA. Military Rites will be conducted by local VFW Posts and the Army National Guard Honors Team.
