Joseph Lawrence Schauer, age 77, of Pennington Gap, Virginia, boarded his heavenly train at the Grand Canyon while vacationing with his family on August 10, 2018. Joe was an elder at First Christian Church of Pennington Gap, an avid lover of trains, a traveler, and a retired mail carrier with the Pennington Gap office of the U.S. Postal Service. Joe served in the U.S. military. He was a retired veteran of both the Army National Guard and the Navy. He was deployed to Guantanamo Bay during the Cuba Missile Crisis and served during Vietnam in the Western Pacific. Joe is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Duff Schauer; daughters Rae Augenstein (Craig) of Johnston City, Tenn., and Rebecca "Becky" Schauer Robertson of Lexington, S.C.; one granddaughter, Kennedy Rae Robertson, of Lexington, S.C.; one sister, Ann Pickens (Harrell), of Grand Lake, Okla.; Benjamin Van Zee, currently residing in Poland, and Sophie Van Zee of Asheville, N.C., who were like a son and daughter; and host-daughter Kina Klangby (Ulf) and children Linnea and Lovisa of Stockholm, Sweden, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at First Christian Church Pennington Gap, Va., on Saturday, August 18, 2018, with Bob Richards officiating. Visitation will begin at 1:00 PM followed by a celebration of life at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Christian Church Pennington Gap Foreign Missions Fund.
