Richard Hayes Obituary

Richard Hill Hayes, Jr. Richard Hayes of Dryden, VA affectionately known as Dickie, was born in Leona Mines, VA on Sunday, October 1, 1944 and entered through the pearly gates walking on streets of gold on Sunday, May 19, 2019.  He was 74 years old, a member of the Dryden Baptist Church and eldest of 5 siblings. Although disabled from an early age, he was very civic minded and served his county and neighbors  passionatley.  He was instrumental in helping establish the Follow Through and Headstart programs for the county.   He was first president of the PTO Organization of Lee County in Dryden. Serving on the board of Handicapped Unlimited, for years he helped to make many programs available to the impaired.  He helped with the establishment of the RIF program and was the secretary of the Dryden Ruritan Club for 8 years.  Early in the recognition of the handicapped, he pushed for ramps and parking spaces to be made available to wheelchair bound patients. Preceding him in death were his father Richard H. Hayes and step-mother Thelma Parsons Hayes, his mother Evelyn Pope Hayes Turner and step-father JD Turner and their son Ronnie Jay Turner (Richard’s half brother and such a joy), Mary Edith Hayes; infant daughter of Richard and Evelyn Hayes.
Remaining family who will miss him dearly are his wife of 54 years Phroncia Haynes Hayes and their two sons and family.  Richard, the eldest and his wife, Susan of Pekin, Illinois.  Richard’s two daughters Sarah and Abigayle the apple of their grandfathers eye.  The youngest son Dr. Shawn Hayes and his wife, Selena of Lynchburg, VA.  His adopted brother Larry
Hayes Holbrook and son Tony of Pennington Gap, VA, his adopted sister and Larry’s twin, Sandy Meadows and husband, John and their two sons, John Erick and Greg of Danville, VA, Shirley Hayes Paul, Richard’s half sister and husband, Bill and their son, Tommy of Mechanicsville, MD. Richard request instead of flowers, please help someone in need.

Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM Thursday May 23, 2019 at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, VA with a funeral service to be held at 2:00 PM with Paul Davis, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Lee Memorial Gardens in Woodway, VA. Pall Bearers will be Tony and Mike Statzer, Terry Pope, Shawn Bocock, Warren Stidham and Tony Holbrook.
