THELMA J. CANTER (87)—JONESVILLE, VA

"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies" (Prov. 31:10 KJV).

Thelma Juanita Canter, 87, of Jonesville, VA, living in Mt. Carmel, TN, with her boys Doug, Zachary, and Adam, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, August 10, at Holston Valley Medical Center with her daughter Carol by her side.

Thelma was an active member of the community and devoted many years of service to the American Legion Auxiliary Post 185 of Jonesville, Rose Hill Rebekah Lodge 88, and many other benevolent causes. She was a loving and compassionate mother and grandmother who took pride in her family and was "Mom" to us all, having raised many of us over the years. She had a precious smile for each person she met, which will be forever cherished by all who knew her. She was of the Baptist faith.

Thelma was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Wildel (Wendell) J. R. Canter, son Robert Canter, granddaughter Zoe Canter, sister Ada Woods, brother James Stapleton, niece Brenda Woods, and parents Claude and Bertha Stapleton.

Thelma is survived by her children Carol Canter of Richmond, VA, Glenn Canter (wife Mary) of Williamsburg, VA, and Douglas Canter (wife Amanda) of Mt. Carmel, TN; grandchildren Charles Travis, Sandra McGee (husband Bill), Brandy Hardy (husband Richard), Mindy Murray (husband Jeff), Bobby Canter (Debbie), Rebecca Parrish (husband Mike), Amy Letterman (husband Danny), Heather Peters (husband Jimmy), Shaun Canter, Taylor Canter, Emily Canter, Zachary A. Canter, and Adam Canter; 15 great-grandchildren, including Brian McGee (wife Jenn), Jennifer McGee, Erin Murray, Grace Murray; great-great grandchildren, including Oliver McGee; and, many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including her sister-in-law Florine Stapleton and her beloved dog Tootsie.

Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2019 until time of service at Province Funeral Home, Pennington Gap, VA. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Paul Davis, Jr. officiating. Graveside service will follow at Miller’s Chapel Cemetery. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
