Wanda Fay (Blair) Slemp, 92, passed away peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior in the early hours of Monday, February 6th, 2023. Fay was born to Emmett F. and Susie “Sudie” (Smith) Blair on February 28, 1930 in Chad, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by siblings Margaret Sue, Mary Lou, and Claudette.
She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Charles Herbert Slemp, Sr. on October 18th, 1948 in Dryden, Virginia.
Fay leaves to cherish her memory one child, Charles Herbert Slemp, Jr., six grandchildren Chuck, Wesley, Andrew, Hunter, Alexis, and Andres, and seven great-grandchildren.
Fay graduated from Dryden High School before working as the bookkeeper to the Lonesome Pine Regional Library in Wise for nearly 20 years. Following retirement, she and Herbert moved to the beaches of Carolina before continuing her employment as a Librarian Assistant at Southeastern Community College. Following the death of her husband, Fay returned to Lee County where she worked as tax preparer until she was 83 years of age. “Grandmother” as she was known to her grandchildren to be a wonderful storyteller, a fierce Duke Blue Devils fan, and an expert sandcastle maker. She loved to garden and show off her flowers, she read every John Grisham book, and enjoyed sewing. She was a hardworking woman of strong character and had an exceptional sense of humor. She loved her son, Charlie, her daughter-in-law Jean, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren passionately.
Visitation will be from 12:00 until 2:00 PM Friday, February 10, 2023 at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, VA.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Bill Rines officiating.
Burial will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap, VA.
