Freda Gibbons
Our beloved Mom, Freda Wingfield Heflin Gibbons, age 90, of Mount Airy, NC, went to be with the Lord on January 16, 2023. She was a God-fearing woman, loved by all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed. Freda was born Dec. 15, 1932, in Springton, WV, to John Robert and Ada Wingfield Heflin. She spent her teenage years in the Newport News, VA, area with her maternal uncle Richard Wingfield's family, graduating from both Warwick High School and Johnson Bible College. She married James Earl "Jim" Gibbons on Sept. 4, 1955, and they were happily married for 53 years until his death in 2013. They raised their two sons, Jonathan and Andrew in Mount Airy, NC, where she lived most her life. Freda rejoiced in her love of the Lord. She always had a smile, never complained and started each day with a prayer and a mission to help others. Her greatest joys were her husband, her boys, grandchildren, great grandchild and her granddogs. For almost five decades, Freda assisted Jim with the publication of "The Sword and Staff," a paper presenting the simple, nonsectarian message of God with readers across the world. All the publications can be found at The Sword and Staff.com . She was also her family's unofficial historian. She is survived by her sons, Jonathan Gibbons and Andrew (Ena) Gibbons; grandchildren, Zak, Lydia, Anna, Abby and Aaron (Sarah); 1 great grandchild, Henry; sister-in-law, Peggy Gibbons Payne of Ohio; nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends. In addition to her loving husband, James, she was predeceased by her father, mother and sister Edna before she was 8 years old, and later her remaining siblings and their spouses: Icelene (Charlie) Ramsey, John Robert "Jack" Heflin, Myrtle (Luther) Wingfield, Marshall (Peg) Heflin and Rachel (Tom) Whited Lawrence. Services will be at the graveside at 11:00 AM on Sat., Jan. 21, 2023, in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, 300 Henry Gibbons Road, Jonesville, VA. Freda was an active member of the JJ Jones High School Alumni Chapter, which named her an honorary alumni. Given its special place in her heart, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to the JJ Jones High School Alumni Chapter, 4410 Green Meadow Lakes Circle, Winston-Salem, NC, 27106.
