George (Joe) Edward Baumgardner

George (Joe) Edward Baumgardner, age 73, passed away October 1st, 2020 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.  Joe was born July 31st, 1947 at home on Ward Hill in Pennington Gap, Virginia. 

He was a 1965 graduate of Jonesville High School and attended Mountain Empire Community College.  He volunteered for the US Army and served as a military police officer in South Vietnam in 1971-72, where he met his future wife.  After his service in the military, Joe worked for many years as a coal miner for Westmoreland Coal Company.  He loved listening to classic country music, especially George Jones.  Joe also loved vegetable gardening, collecting coins, hunting for mushrooms (Morels) in the springtime, and studying God’s Word.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Non Baumgardner; his son, John Baumgardner; his parents, Lewis and Lillie Baumgardner; his brother, Eugene Baumgardner; his sister, Sally Baumgardner; his maternal grandparents, Hicks Young and Cassie Miser; paternal grandparents, George and Bessie Baumgardner.

Joe is survived by his daughter, Rebecca Clark and husband Terry; grandson River Clark, of Pennington Gap; brothers Robert, Donnie and Michael Baumgardner of Jonesville, Virginia; Terry Baumgardner of Pennington Gap, Virginia; Charles Baumgardner and wife Cindy of Norton, Virginia.  Joe is also survived by his sisters, Mary (Kathy) Williams and husband Lohn of Pflugerville, Texas; Charlotte Kirk and husband Mike of Asheboro, North Carolina; Lynn Bellamy and husband Craig of Jonesville, Virginia; maternal aunt, Margaret Hughes of Pennington Gap, Virginia and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be a memorial service on Friday, October 9th at 1:00 PM at the Baumgardner Family Cemetery on Ward Hill in Pennington Gap, Virginia.  Joe’s and his son John’s remains will be interred together.
