Robert Travis, Duffield, VA.

Robert Emmett Travis, 98, of Duffield, passed away on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at the James H. Quillen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, TN after a brief illness.  Robert grew up in Pennington Gap and was saved as a teenager at the First Baptist Church and most recently attended Thomas Village Baptist Church. He left high school early and went to Baltimore Maryland to work in the Martin Middle River airplane factory.  He then enlisted in the Air Force with his last post being at the Johnston Island Air Force base where he serviced airplanes going to Japan.  He left service in the late 1940’s.
Robert traveled and worked over the US with his last job being an exterminator in Florida. Robert moved around the country in his RV until he could no longer drive.  He liked to read about far away places and especially scientific journals.  Upon his passing his family found a notebook of his musings and ideas.  While he did not follow through with his ideas, some of those things he dreamed up are now part of our everyday life, like the popup desktop notifications for incoming email. 
Robert was predeceased by his parents, Elbert and Dona Travis; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Margarette Sue (Gerald) Campbell, Elberta (Tom) Newberry and infant brother, Elbert Travis, Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Travis, and Ada Travis; one niece, Judy Travis, and one nephew, Chris Campbell. 
Robert is survived by two brothers, Jim Travis of Jonesville and Charlie Travis of Dayton, Ohio;  one sister, Ginny (Wilson) Woodard as well as nephews Jerry, Brian, and Mike (Joann) Campbell,  Wayde (Margi) and Boyd (Robin)Travis; nieces Pam (Dan) Watson, Denean (Cordell) Sharpe, and Sabrina (Lanny) Hass as well as several great-nephews and great-nieces.
Visitation will be from 3:00PM until 4:00 PM Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Province Funeral Home in Pennington Gap, VA. A funeral service will be at 4:00 PM with Paul Davis, Jr officiating. There will not be a graveside service. Robert will be interred at the Travis Family Cemetery in Cooney Hollow on Wednesday, January 25.
