I was very sorry to hear about Hershell. I remember him as a child, he and my father were very good friends back years ago. They worked together a few times in my younger years. My father died in 1982 and was working with Hershell at that time. My deepest condolences.

Hershell, My Very Best Friend Ever. Dr. Charles W. Scott

Hershell was my very best friend ever. We played football and baseball together, cut mining timber and hitch-hiked hundreds of miles throughout the mountains to see our girlfriends. Before each baseball game, we found each other to toss warm-up pitches. Just a week prior to his death, we met at the St. Charles, Virginia High School Reunion at Norton and neither of us could explain how we had allowed all those years, 53, to elapse without seeing each other. Hershell observed correctly that, unbelievably, we had never had a fuss or cross word between us, ever. As remarkable as it may seem,, we always rooted for each other and never one time criticized each other. His last words to me as he placed his hands on my shoulders were, "I never want you to waste another dime on a hotel when you can come and spend the week with me. I promised that I would come see him next year. " I have no understanding of why both of us trusted and respected each other so much...but we did. Hershel, I hope you are up there somewhere hearing your old buddy say, "I think you were the best Hersh."

Hershell was so good to and for my Aunt Lo over the many years of her illness before she passed. He was always good to my mom and dad. He had a heart of gold and will be missed by all who knew him. My heart goes out to friends and family.

You are correct. He loved Lo with his whole heart and she was good for Heshell as well. I have known Hershell since I was a little girl, and he always had such a good heart...if he though he had offfended someone it would worry him so much. I remember a discussion we had after Lo passed and how he said his life would never be the same. He loved her children as his own and those grandkids too.....and they all loved Pappy Hershell! Our family will miss him and his random visits.
